[Day 2]: Who will you be a hero to?

Welcome to Day 2 of Wild & Free Entrepreneurship Week, where I’m giving you the process for:

⚡️ Redesigning Your Life to be Wild & Free (Even If You’re Stuck in a Corporate Job or Income-Generating Commitments That Are Costing You Your Freedom). ⚡️

Yesterday, I kickstarted the series with a prompt to get you thinking about what you really want. So often, we don’t have an ideas problem when figuring out what to do in our business; we have the challenge of narrowing down into ONE clear thing to be known for and offer.

As a reminder, here’s what’s coming this week:

The hero map will help you make the design you want for your life even clearer, so there’s no question in your mind or your audience’s mind about who you’re talking to. BUT, we’re doing this without a dusty old buyer persona or customer avatar exercise. I have a more straightforward approach for you this time.

Who do you want to be a hero to?

Yesterday, we uncovered what you really want. You chose a dream life scenario and something that’ll make you happy bringing in money (don’t worry if you don’t have that money map laid out yet).

Today, you get to decide what field you’ll work in to get what you want and who needs it so badly that you’ll get excited to show up big for them each day. Both sides matter, and it all boils down to this:

Who do you want to be a hero to?

My mentor asked me this question, and the answer didn’t just help me develop the one reader I was writing to (a common copywriting practice). It also helped me frame my entire business so that I was sure I wasn’t unintentionally trapping myself somewhere that wouldn’t give me the type of freedom I really wanted.

Here’s an example of what I mean.

Pretend that yesterday you chose the wedding industry as where you really wanted to plant your flag. So, you’ve decided to start a newsletter and brand all about helping families with wedding planning. But, that’s broad. There are a whole host of different audiences inside of it that will dramatically change how you show up.

  • If you want to help facilitate weddings, you’ll be a hero to local couples in your town.
  • If you want to teach how to plan weddings, you’ll be a hero to families.
  • If you want to share wedding trends, you’ll be a hero to families, wedding planners or brands.

Each audience will have a different desire in mind when coming to your business.

  • Local couples want to know the hot spots for getting married, caterers, vendors, pastors, and premarital counseling.
  • Families new to the wedding planning process want to know how to make the day special so they don’t miss a detail.
  • Families interested in trendy weddings want the latest and greatest to make their day stand out and personal. Wedding planners want to make a name for themselves in their industry by staying ahead of trends. The same goes for brands developing new products for the wedding industry.

And because each of these audiences wants different nuanced things, you will have different deliverables and promises for each.

  • Local couples expect you to be in the trenches of the local scene, so you’ll need to be active in networking, taking pictures of new hot spots, etc., so you can highlight what’s in your area and put them into a blog or newsletter.
  • Families who are new to the wedding planning process are looking for tools to keep things simple, so they’ll want checklists, online courses, resources, etc. to help with every step of the process.
  • Families interested in wedding trends will want a blog and sweet Instagram grid to scroll through for ideas, so you’ll need a blog, newsletter, and strong social media presence.
  • Wedding planners and brands want to bring the latest to their couples without pigeonholing themselves into trends that will pass too quickly or be too quirky, so they want you to point them in the right direction ahead of time through a blog, newsletter, industry reports, and social media presence.
  • Brands want to be so far ahead of the curve that they have time to develop, manufacture, and market their products, so the focus will be on blogging, a private newsletter, and industry reports they can purchase.

Yes, all of these have newsletters to start. Yes, all of these audiences need content to be educated. And yet, each audience has a different content need.

Back to that initial question. I want you to think through this today as you design this wild & free life: Who do you want to be a hero to?

And does it align with what you said you really want for your life and business?

Tomorrow, I’ll be back to share an easy way to figure out if this idea and audience really want what you need before you pursue something that won’t get you to that wild and free entrepreneurial life. Until then, happy thinking!
