I’m awkward. You might be a little awkward, too (it’s okay if you are).
Have you ever walked into a room at a networking event and looked around only to realize you don’t know anyone?
Or maybe you know someone’s face, but you’re not buddy-buddy in the way that you can beeline through the chatting groups to start a conversation.
Or you might recognize someone and instantly look down, hoping they won’t make eye contact because the last time they talked to you, you felt like they were after something other than your business-y brains.
I call this: Networking Anxiety
And it’s destroying so many enormously talented women.
Networking anxiety is when you know you need to form connections to grow visibility around your business, grow your leads, grow your referral network, grow, well, your business, yet you avoid those cringe-y networking events because:
- They rarely work the way they should
- They’re stomach-turningly uncomfortable
- They cause you to drink so much coffee that you leave feeling both deflated and hyped up at the same time
This has been an emotional burden for so many female entrepreneurs over the years. How do you leave your family behind to attend an event where you might gather lukewarm contacts? You’re already operating without margin, can you really fit in another event that hasn’t worked in the past?
The short answer is yes because networking catalyzes a life-first, content-fueled business. But most of us ladies have been spinning our wheels, feeling it’s ineffective to put ourselves out there because we’ve been stepping foot in the wrong rooms.
I’m not here to repeat the trite phrase “Your network is your net worth” because I believe that’s caused too many women to spend their time building their business in a way that doesn’t work (which has then spiraled into frustration, imposter syndrome, and all sorts of comparison games).
Instead, I’m here to encourage you to dismantle the networking anxiety that’s caused you to stay hidden in lieu of something much more impactful (and fun).
There is a way to make networking work for you without draining your emotional energy.
Who you know matters. Who you surround yourself with matters, too. But you don’t have to lower your standards to rooms that make you want to curl up in a ball and cry every time you walk in and roll out again. Instead, there’s a way to make the process of connecting feel enjoyable (and lucrative) at the same time.
If you’re ready to build a meaningful network — one you’ll love referring people to and one who’ll love referring people back to you, too — join me next week for a free seminar with the master networkers themselves, Angela Greaser and Melissa Camilleri of The Prosper Network.
Your network will allow you to create value.
Your network will give your work a voice.
Your network will motivate you when you’re down.
Your network will inspire you to keep pushing upward.
Your network will be your organic referral source, putting your name in rooms you’ve never stepped in.
But you have to show up. The good news is, it doesn’t have to be a cringe-y when you do.
Save your seat here to see first-hand what I mean.
P.S. If you're ready to build your own content-fueled, life-first business, here are a few ways I can help:
